 KENDO TRAINING

Kendo training consists of a variety of activties encompassing basic fundamental movements through to complex techniques.  Combat in Kendo involves high pressure dynamic situations.  Success requires participants to:

  • initiate and respond in a manner that is both instinctive and technically correct;
  • maintain composure under pressure; and
  • have the courage and commitment to finish an attack once initiated

 The video below shows two dynamic kendo training activities, Kirikaeshi and Kakarigeiko, both critical to building these aspects within kendo players.  The video is from Doshisha University Kendo Club training in Japan.  This is the club of Hozumi Yamasaki who trained with Rembuden Kendo Club 2019/20.

Kendo Kata is a component of training involving pre-arranged forms performed without armour.  The first 7 forms involve the tachi (long sword) and the last three involve the kodachi (short sword).  The benefits of Kata include:

  • correct directions for the datotsu (strikes or thrusts)
  • correct attack intervals
  • correct body movements
  • sincerity inherent in martial techniques
  • developing kigurai (pride)
